Speaks Chapel and Cemetery
Speaks Chapel in Rose Hill, VA
Speaks Chapel in Rose Hill, Lee County, Virginia was founded by Rev. Nicholas Speaks in 1828 as a log “meeting house.” That meeting house was later replaced by a frame structure, existing today, that became the Speaks Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church. The building is no longer used as a church.
In recent years, the Speak/e/s Family Association (SFA) provided support to maintain the structure of the chapel during those years after it ceased being a Methodist church, until it was bought by a family relative who maintains it.
The Speaks Chapel Cemetery, across the road from the chapel building, has marked and unmarked graves of the Speaks family and is held dear in the hearts of the Speaks family. You can read accounts of the descendants of Rev. Nicholas Speaks in Our Stories.
The SFA continues to provide for the mowing and upkeep of the Speaks Chapel Cemetery through contributions from SFA members. Donations are welcome.
